Title: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by Yury R on 07/22/08 at 18:40:18 As it turns out, I am way behind. So, would like to catch up. Any suggestions for general sort of books/texts that cover most of AI methods from practical point of view (don't want lengthy theorems etc..) Or is it possible to get a practical grasp with books at all? Amazon has come up with two choices: 1) Artificial Intelligence: A Guide to Intelligent Systems (Hardcover) by Michael Negnevitsky (Author): http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/reader/0321204662 2) Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (International Edition) (Paperback) by Stuart Russell (Author), Peter Norvig (Author) : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Artificial-Intelligence-Modern-Approach-International/dp/0130803022 Would really appreciate your opinions. |

A good one on genetic algorithms is the introduction by Melanie Mitchell (it's on amazon). It has tons of applications and is also readable- including the math. Regards, Max |

Title: Re: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by Algo Designer on 08/06/08 at 12:14:42 I thoroughly enjoyed reading Artificial Minds by Stan Franklin about 7 years ago (time flies!). I reckon it was a great book for its time. It is a very light read, i.e. the presentation level is fairly basic. The scope is quite wide and it has a lot of interesting facts from the history of AI. I really liked the Animal Minds chapter at the time. |
Title: Re: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by Algo Designer on 08/06/08 at 12:20:16 Swarm Intelligence by Russell C. Eberhart, Yuhui Shi, and James Kennedy is a great introduction to the topic of Swarm Intelligence. |

Title: Re: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by Yury R on 08/14/08 at 17:40:27 Bought both "Artificial Minds" and Russel/Norvig's books - the content quality is beyond my original expectations (in a good sense, of course). Would recommend to others. |
Title: Re: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by kirppu on 08/19/08 at 21:55:11 I would definitely recommend the following book Multi-objective Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithms. Most of the codes are available on the author's website: http://www.iitk.ac.in/kangal/codes.shtml |
Title: Re: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by kirppu on 08/19/08 at 22:08:14 Note that the following courses http://www.genetic-programming.com/coursemainpage.html#_Sources_of_Software cover the basics of genetic algorithms. |

Title: Re: Plain fundamental books on AI Post by StatDataMiner on 09/08/08 at 13:23:06 The best book that I have read regarding statistical learning(aka machine learning or predictive learning) is Hastie et al, 2001, The Elements of Statistical Learning: Data Mining, Inference, and Prediction. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0387952845/trevorhastie-20 http://www-stat.stanford.edu/~tibs/ElemStatLearn/ |
